HISTORY
From ancient times, according to some encyclopaedias, villagers, and researchers Farmakas has existed since the time of the Byzantine Empire. However, many believe that our village was founded either during the Venetian period or during the Frankish period, however there is no evidence to prove this since the name of our village does not refer to a foreign name of the two empires.

How was our village named Farmakas and where did this name come from?

Our ancestors tell us that there are three versions of the origin of the name. The first version says that our village was considered famous for its herbs with which people made various useful medicines (pharmaka). Thus, the first version of the name came from this. A second explanation is that the first man of the village was called Farmakas and he also made medicines (pharmaka) from the herbs that grew in the area. And finally, there is a third explanation for the name, which states that the name comes from the word "farmatzin". In the Cypriot dialect the word farmatzin is the bitter cold that is strongly observed during the winter in the village.
